Today, in the middle of my Ethology (animal behavior) midterm examination, I had a thought.
What would the world be like without zippers?
I tried in vain to force my mind back to the matter at hand (for example, proximate and ultimate questions of animal behavior), but that was it. Fighting was futile. I had to think this through - what WOULD the world be like without zippers?
I struggled through the rest of the test (still thinking about zippers, mind you), and after finishing I wandered over to Mirror Lake Cafe to grab a bite to eat before my next class. I sat down to eat my breakfast sandwich (ham, egg, and cheese) and pulled about my Conservation Biology notes to study for tomorrow's midterm examination, when I started to notice all the zippers. Zippers on purses, zippers on backpacks, zippers on shoes, zippers on jeans, zippers on khakis, and yes, even zippers on hats. I didn't see one person in that cafe without a zipper.
So I ask you: What would this world be like without zippers? Would buttons take over? Or maybe velcro?
So today I say thank God for zippers!
Or maybe not. We'll see how I did on that ethology exam first.

Other news:
Nightwish plays in Cleveland at 7:30pm tonight. I am stuck here in Columbus learning about population viability analyses, life histories, and wetland ecology. I am SAD! It is COLD! My brain is FRIED!
I get to see Jennifer (REI-CHAN!) Friday!
I'm going to a Halloween party Friday night...still not sure what my costume will be.
Saturday is Quincy's 21st birthday and the Buckeye's game. Translation? = GOOD TIME!

Now to make it past tomorrow... I think I need a cigarette.
It's my senior year and I still haven't quite got this studying thing figured out. My first exam of the quarter is Monday (in physiology), and instead of studying I've been surfing the internet wasting precious time. Fanfiction.net will be my ultimate downfall, I just know it. While a great majority of fanfic writing isn't worth reading, there are some really talented authors out there who know exactly what we rabid fangirls want to read and give it to us with a heaping side of mashed potatoes and gravy. Curse you, obsessive fangirl Megan!
So it seems Autumn has finally come. This morning I had to be on campus at 7:30am for my Conservation Biology class. That in itself was enough to make me hostile, especially since I had tickets for today's OSU game versus Kent State at 12pm. Our professor made no guarantees that we would be back in time for kick off; I considered skipping, but a missed field trip means a missed field entry, which means a lowered field notebook grade...so I went.
Anyway, We traveled to the Highbanks Metro Parks to survey an old forest (species richness of trees), and it was so flippin' freezing that I couldn't feel my fingers the whole time. I had on three layers of clothing, but I couldn't find my gloves. Not only was I cold, but our professor is both HIGHLY unorganized and, pardon my french, fucking clueless. No kidding. He didn't seem to know or understand his own procedures, and so we wasted a ton of time hemming and hawwing, trying to figure out exactly what we were supposed to do. I could feel my blood pressure rising by the minute, especially when he told us off for wasting time. Pardon me, but WE weren't the ones stopping to identify every single tree we came across. WE weren't the ones who chose to make a side trip to the wetlands to do a little bird watching. Now these things are all very well and good, and as a zoology student I am interested, but NOT when we are on a tight time schedule and have a shit ton to do and only a little bit of time in which to do it.
I have a feeling we weren't very scientific in our surveying, especially since by the end of the morning my group was calling every tree a Sugar Maple. Somehow we managed to get everything finished in spite of our inept professor. Fortunately he's a really nice guy; it would be easier to bitch about him if he was a jerk, but he does seem to genuinely care about conservation biology. Plus, he did drop off those of us off who had game tickets close to the stadium. I arrived in my seat RIGHT at kickoff - the timing couldn't have been more perfect. We (Michele, my friend and roommate, and myself) only stayed through halftime, because I am supposed to be studying and she had plans to travel south to visit her grandma and go horseback riding with Horseman's Association. I had planned on going horseback riding too...that is, until I found out about this stupid exam. Bah.
And so I'm sitting here in my living room, in front of my heater, with lit candles and a bit of Pink Martini playing lightly in the background, trying to find the inspiration to study. Kidney function, however, just isn't that appealing to me at present.
In other news...I am HUGELY disappointed because I can't find anyone to go to the Madeleine Peyroux concert with me, and Nightwish is coming to Cleveland to perform on a WEDNESDAY when I have classes. I am so, so sad. :_(
I actually just received my preordered copy of Nightwish's new CD in the mail the other day, and I am THRILLED with it! Anette, their new lead singer, is fantastic! This CD is definitely going on my list of all-time-favorite CDs. Is it so strange that I like a Finnish Symphonic Power Metal band? XD Seriously though, you should check out their single Amaranth, because not only is it a fantastic song but the music video is gorgeous. Nightwish songs are extremely poetic and take a bit of interpretation, but that's one of the reasons I love them so much. "Amaranth", I believe, is about the fall of Lucifer (Amaranth = Lucifer):
Baptized with a perfect name, the doubting one by heart alone without himself. War between him and the Day, need someone to blame- In the end little he can do alone...
I don't quite agree with the message ("Caress the one, the hiding Amaranth"), but it is still an awesome song. It could have numerous interpretations, but that's the one that sticks out the most from the music video. Anyone have any other ideas after viewing?
If anyone is curious, here is Nightwish with their previous lead singer. Tarja's style was much more operatic: Nemo, by Nightwish - This happens to be another of my favorite Nightwish songs.
Alright, the length of this post clearly proves that now I'm just procrastining. No one probably gives a damn about my eclectic musical taste...
I am once again in need of an attitude adjustment. Lists usually help in times like these, so here goes nothing!
Fun things:
1) The beach is coming! I will be spending the first week of September in (hopefully) sunny Holden Beach with some of my favorite people in the whole world.
In preparation for the trip, Marianne and I went swimsuit shopping on Sunday. I hate swimsuit shopping even more than I hate jeans shopping, and that's saying something! We were both successful, however, and I found the most adorable one-piece retro polka-dot swimsuit! I needed to find a one-piece, because I already had 2 two-pieces and needed something I could splash around in the ocean in without having to worry about any accidents. Even though the polka-dot swimsuit wasn't on sale, I decided to splurge. It's so very rare that I find a swimsuit I'm satisfied with! Thank you Macy's. :)
2) The Lion King Michele and I are heading up to Cleveland on Wednesday to see the Lion King Broadway Musical...for the second time this year. Once again: I need a cheaper hobby. Still can't wait!
3) Kick ball game/Ice cream social on Thursday! I don't know if I'll be back in Columbus in time, but if I am then I'm totally going to open a can of whoop-ass.
Not-So-Fun Things:
1) Vet school...errr grrrr arrrrgh aaaack.
2) I'm taking the GRE on August 23rd.
3) Work is killing me. Every day is positively mind-numbing, and I think this may be contributing to my apathetic mood lately.
In a sad attempt to cheer myself up, I have given myself permission to have a dance party by myself whenever I damn well please. Christina Aguilera and Cascada are current choice favorites, although Linda Eder's "Man of La Mancha" and "Big Time" are also euphoric (I'm sure drag queen Edina Starlight would agree with me. Oh the things you find on YouTube!)
I think I'll head to bed now to read a bit. I'm currently reading the newest Kitty Norville book by Carrie Vaughn, and I must say...there's nothing like a good paranormal mystery/romance!
Hm, so this is what happens when one spends a week alone in an empty house with a piano. This is "RHAPSODIE", by Maxwell Eckstein, a song that haunted me throughout my high school days. I may be a little rusty playing the piano, but at least I can still perform this one! I ought to be able to, after the amount of time I spent rehearsing it...
It just hit me... Howard Shore, the composer of the Lord of the Rings music, is actually going to BE there and CONDUCT the Cleveland Orchestra. *_*
Academy Award-winning film composer and conductor Howard Shore will make his Blossom Festival debut conducting a performance of his Lord of the Rings Symphony on July 21. The symphony, comprised of music from the Lord of the Rings motion picture trilogy, will be performed with projections of original illustrations and storyboards by artists Alan Lee and John Howe. Mr. Shore led The Cleveland Orchestra in three sold-out performances of The Lord of the Rings Symphony at Severance Hall in February 2006.
I just had a mild heart attack. I'm so excited now I could BURST! I just adore this man's work. I wonder if there will be an opportunity to meet him and ask for his autograph? XD
I also officially have plans for this Friday's release of the last Harry Potter book. My friend Christine and I are traveling to Dayton to experience the craziness that is Harry Potter fandom! http://www.hp-ohio.com/wilmington.html Should be fun! :D
