Introduction:
Hotaru is introduced during the third season of Sailor Moon, Sailor Moon S, and is the central part of the story during that time. She is quiet and shy, as well as sickly, and lives with her father Professor Tomoe (her mother died when she was young). She has incredible healing powers, which alienates her from most people (the kids at school think she's weird and avoids her). However, Chibi-Usa befriends her without knowing her, and the two become best friends. See the Sailor Moon S summary to read more about Hotaru's identity as Sailor Saturn, and as Mistress 9.
At the end of the S season, Hotaru becomes a baby and is taken and cared for by Setsuna, Haruka, and Michiri (she calls them Haruka-papa, Michiru-mama, and Setsuna-mama). During the Stars season, due to the threat of Neherenia Hotaru grows at a rapid pace, and ends the series at the age of 8 when Sailor Saturn returns her memories, and she becomes the senshi of silence to fight.

Sailor Saturn is considered one of the most powerful sailor senshi because she posesses the ability to destroy the planet with her attack, Silence Glaive Surprise (hence the reason Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus feared her revival during the S season). However, she usually uses her Silence Glaive as her main weapon.
